New modern affordable apartments exclusively for over 55s open in Warrington

05 October 2022

Surrounded by open Cheshire countryside, a stone’s throw away from the cosmopolitan village of Stockton Health and set in an established quiet community, our latest over 55s development, Broomfields, opened its doors this month, providing contemporary living for people over 55 in South Warrington.

To celebrate the opening Torus invited down representatives from partners, Caddick Construction, John McCall Architects, plus Steve Park, Director of Growth at Warrington Borough Council and Craig Bradley, Senior Manager at Homes England.

The £4.5million Broomfields development, situated in the desirable and quiet Cobbs Estate in Appleton, offers 45 high specification, modern, spacious one- and two-bedroom apartments for affordable rent, featuring beautifully finished kitchens and bathrooms, on-site car parking, a communal lounge, lift, repairs service all set in its own landscaped grounds.

Group Housing Director, Paul Warburton, said:

“It’s a priority for Torus to bring quality, affordable homes to people who need them. We don’t just build apartments; we create homes with style which people are proud of.

“We are delighted to be welcoming our new residents to Broomfields, we hope that the new scheme soon develops its own sense of community like our other schemes and that it will also soon become an asset to the community.”

Residents have started moving in, including Mr and Mrs J, both 75, they have moved back to Appleton after living out of the area for 10 years, to be closer to family in an easier to manage home, they said:

“Initially when our family suggested Broomfields we were not sure as we assumed it was an old people’s home, but that could not be further from the truth. The building and apartment are lovely and we are so excited to start this new chapter of our life.”

The ‘new’ Broomfields scheme is on the site of the old Broomfields which closed in 2019, which despite years of regular investment, was no longer fit for purpose and failed to meet the standards expected of a modern facility. The plans for the new development were shared with residents and local Councillors prior to construction.

Some of the original residents have moved to Harpers Green, Torus’s £11m purpose-built extra care facility in Padgate, however the scheme is looking forward to welcoming back one resident, who has chosen to return, an option open to all original Broomfields residents.

Sarah Houghton-Grimshaw, Torus Supported Housing Commissioning Manager, added:

“It’s been great working with local partners, including the local council and our construction partners, Caddick Construction to see this project come to life and provide fit for purpose, modern, contemporary homes for over 55s in the local area.”

Chris Bowen, Managing Director of Torus Developments, summarised by saying:

“Taking an active role in regenerating communities and building homes that people need and want is central to how we develop. Broomfields is an excellent example of how we work with the fabric of places to transform existing assets and create schemes that meet and exceed the expectations of residents and local people.

“I am thrilled to see Broomfields complete and look forward to see how it continues to positively influence the local area.”

The development was part-funded by Homes England and sees Broomfields join Torus’s growing portfolio of specialist homes across the Northwest.

Broomfields has been specially designed for people aged over 55 who may be looking to downsize, need a more manageable home or would just like to live amongst people of a similar age. You can find out more about Broomfields and how to apply here.
