Community Clean-up Impact Day in Newton-Le-Willows

23 February 2023

This month, Torus colleagues teamed up with local tenants and residents in the Sefton Street area of Newton-Le-Willows to clear rubbish and spruce up communal green spaces.

The Community Clean-up Impact Day was co-ordinated by the Torus St Helens Neighbourhood Team, who were joined by local councillors Councillor Terry Maguire and Councillor Karl Collier as well as representatives from the Torus Foundation and the Greenspace Team.

The Greenspaces Team, from our contractor, HMS, helped tidy garage sites and carried out a litter pick, whilst our charitable arm, Torus Foundation were on hand to offer residents advice and support with health and wellbeing, employment and skills and financial inclusion.

The successful event which provided an opportunity to support the local community and help make a place where people want to live, saw Torus colleague and partners helping resident to fill four skips and two vans with their unwanted bulky items and rubbish.

The event also offered colleagues and tenants to meet and feel part of the community. Tenants were invited to attend, encouraging them to bring out any rubbish they have that perhaps they cannot get to a skip or the tip themselves to dispose of. They were also invited to join an Estate Walkabout to help us identify areas of concern as well to come and chat about any issues they may have and find out about what support.

Torus Neighbourhood Team Leader (St Helens), Jodie Gaskell, said:

“The event was a great example of what can be achieved through effective partnership working and collaboration and the significant benefits it brings to our customers.

"For us, it was also important to show that we are here for our customers, creating a presence and helping people get rid of things that they would not usually be able to, which makes our job easier.

"The event helped drive forward Torus’s mission to build stronger communities and we very much look forward to organising similar events in the future.”

Newton-le-Willows Independent Councillor, Terry McGuire, added:

“We would like to thank the Torus for holding a community impact day, in the area.

"The Torus team were fantastic, giving out much needed friendly advice and signposting, from finances to building work. The Greenspace contractors were also great and very professional in tidying up many overgrown areas.

"The skips allowed those who were unable to get to Council tips, particularly the elderly, a chance to put rubbish out and have it collected.

"The project created a good feel in the community when residents are offered help, whilst helping people and keeping our communities tidy, potentially having less fly-tipping.”

Thanks to everyone who got involved to help with the event and we are looking at similar future events.
