Discussing safeguarding with Extra Care residents

03 January 2024

The week before Christmas, residents at Torus Extra Care Scheme, Foundry Wharf in St Helens, welcomed the Independent Chair of the St Helens Safeguarding Adults Board, Ian Cardwell to a special meeting to discuss the role of the board and have a conversation about any concerns they may have about safeguarding, in their community, in their homes and any challenges they may face in St Helens.

The St Helens Safeguarding Board is a partnership of agencies responsible for protecting adults in St Helens from abuse and promoting their welfare, including physical abuse, economic abuse, coercive and controlling behaviour, modern slavery, hoarding and other issues. Similar boards exist in all local authority areas.

Talking about the event, Ian said:

“In my role, I sit between the residents of St Helens and the people who deliver services to them. It was interesting to meet representatives from Torus and hear from the residents’ views on and experience with safeguarding in St Helens.”

The 16 Foundry Wharf residents who attended raised a variety of issues, covering feeling safe, traffic and parking, crime and visiting the town centre.

Torus Tenant Voice Team Leader, Annmarie Flynn added:

“As new to Torus, it was a fabulous opportunity to meet and chat with the residents and get their views and ideas on making improvements to Foundry Wharf.

“I was also thrilled that the residents wanted to find out more about getting involved and giving their views and we are more than happy to support. We are looking forward to attending their next monthly meeting to give them an update on their ideas and suggestions.”
