HMS hands over historic Liverpool building to Torus

20 February 2024

Celebrating a new chapter in the story of Allerton’s iconic Fire and Police Station – a building synonymous with The Beatles’ classic Penny Lane – award winning construction company, HMS, has officially handed over the newly christened, Station Mews, to affordable housing group, Torus.

The £8 million project has seen the formerly defunct and disused buildings transformed into a 47-unit housing development and 2 3-bedroom semi-detached houses, 2 3-bedroon and 3 4-bedroom townhouses and 40 1- and 2-bedroom apartments, all for shared ownership, now occupy the iconic site.

Working hard to retain several original features, including the Fire Station’s crest, facade and external walls as well as incorporating modern methods of construction and energy efficient materials and technology, Station Mews is truly a development that commemorates the site’s rich history and celebrates the future.

Discussing the completion of Station Mews, HMS’ Managing Director, Paul Worthington, said: “It’s fantastic to see Station Mews complete and what once was an unloved, forgotten building brought back to life. We all know how important these new homes are to the local community and it’s fantastic to be able to share in their pride for the site.

“This was a challenging, yet rewarding build, seeing the team incorporate modular technologies and traditional build techniques. However, seeing it complete and the intricacies of the build programme shine is really worth it. I can’t wait to welcome Station Mews’ latest residents to their new homes and see if this latest iteration of the building is lucky enough to be included in another song!”

Continuing, Torus Chief Executive, Steve Coffey, said: “This is the second time HMS has regenerated a historic building in Liverpool and created a new, unique housing scheme for Torus and I already know that it will be as successful and popular as the team's redevelopment of Ogden’s Tobacco Factory in Everton. Seeing Station Mews complete is terrific and knowing that it will give a number of people the opportunity to get onto the property ladder is even better. This is just the latest milestone in building's long history, and I can’t wait to see what the next page in its story is for those who will now call Station Mews home.”
